President's Report
Objectives. As noted in our last newsletter, the Board of Directors has five primary objectives this year. I can report that we are making progress in:
  • Renovating the Community Center and Pool
  • Maintaining a solid financial posture and fully funding the Replacement Reserve
  • Expanding Hunter Village Drive traffic calming measures
  • Identifying a capital expense project for improving the Community Center and Pool.
  • Instituting an orientation program for new Board members and committee chairs.
Pool and Community Center Renovation. We have completed a renovation of the pool complex, which was showing signs of wear, and we’ve heard some nice complements. This project was in addition to the scheduled replacement of the filter for the first time in 23 years -- a major project. In addition, the automated pool registration system we set up two years ago has also proven its worth. We are now looking at options for capital improvements to the pool area to provide expanded storage space and recreational space.

Hearing on Hunter Village Drive Traffic Calming Recommendations. For over two years the Board of Directors has identified traffic on Hunter Village Drive as our most pressing safety issue, especially its use as a shortcut from Old Keene Mill to Rolling Road. Traffic will only increase with the implementation of the Fort Belvoir BRAC and widening of Rolling Road. The hearing we held on May 14th to solicit community comments on our Safety Committee’s recommendations was well attended, and was remarkable for the expressions of overwhelming support. In fact, there were a number of statements supporting the installation of speed humps (not bumps) that went beyond the Safety Committees recommendations.

As you know, we have followed a deliberate and methodical approach to this issue, including extensive deliberation by the Safety Committee, review of the Committee’s recommendations by the Board of Directors, publication in the previous newsletter and the hearing. The Board approved the recommendations in our June meeting, and I have forwarded them to Supervisor Herrity for action. Of course, the recommendations are subject to Fairfax County and VDOT approval and support. We will, of course, closely monitor their progress.

Orientation Program. We have initiated an orientation program for new members of the Board of Directors and committee chairs. We are confident that this will be of value for our community leadership team.

BRAC and the Rolling Road Project. We continue to closely follow the BRAC process and development of plans for the widening of Rolling Road, especially the need to provide a safe way to make a left on to Rolling Road from Hunter Village Drive.

Neighborhood Watch. Our Neighborhood Watch urgently needs volunteers to fill its depleted ranks, especially in our town home neighborhoods. This is an important asset in our Community efforts to prevent crime. Please contact Anna Jensen at jensen.anna.m@gmail.com to sign up to patrol for Neighborhood Watch.

Recreation Committee: The Board of Directors has appointed Joanne Warren as the Chair of the Recreation committee, replacing Cheryl Hanback. Congratulations to Joanne, and to all the volunteers on this important committee.

Foreclosures. A distressing indicator of the turmoil in our economy is the skyrocketing number of mortgage foreclosures. We are informed that Daventry has one of the lowest foreclosure rates in Northern Virginia.

Have a happy summer,
Dick

BRAC Update July 2008
The Fairfax County Dept. of Transportation held a hearing on June 30, 2008. Below is a link which includes updated information about the amendments and a recap of the June 30, 2008 public hearing.

In the next decade we will see the influx of up to 20,000 new jobs to Fort Belvoir and the Engineer Proving Grounds. The Base Realignment And Closure (BRAC) affects our area because of the widening of Rolling Road and its connectivity to the Springfield Parkway and 95.. Although VDOT has scrapped the widening of Rolling Rd. south of the Parkway, construction on Rolling north of the Parkway will proceed. Fort Belvoir has a link on its website which has additional information (large file).
