OCTOBER IS FIRE PREVENTION MONTH
Remember to put fresh batteries in your smoke alarms. For
minimum protection, a smoke alarm is required near each and every separate sleeping area of the home as well
as in the basement. It is recommended that there be at least one smoke alarm on every level of the home.
Many thanks are on order for our Neighborhood Watch Coordinator Anna Jensen who has given us her resignation
effective at the end of this year. She has been a tireless volunteer who has rejuvenated our NW program.
Anna will remain in the Safety Committee as a representative from area V.
We also bid farewell to Glenda Christensen, one of our reps from area II, who has resigned for personal reasons.
We thank Glenda for her service. Glenda recently told me that she learned so much from serving on the
committee and wished that everyone would take a turn on a committee. She really got a feel for how the community
functions.
Over the past few months we have been surveying our residents to find out how much interest there is in forming
an emergency response team within the community. It is apparent from the tepid response that until there is
a major problem, mostly likely weather related, there won't be much interest. Once an event occurs we know
you'll come forward to help! The committee feels that having some basic emergency response supplies on
hand makes sense. Steve Richardson who is CERT trained has volunteered to pull those supplies together for
us and will coordinate a response if necessary.
Oh how I long to tell you that the Safety Committee was not responsible for parking enforcement. In reality
dealing with parking issues is one of our primary functions. We work closely with our community manager
Don Mazzei to ensure that equitable parking is available for all residents in our townhome neighborhoods.
When I look back over past editions of the newsletter I see that I've touched on this subject many, many times.
Some of the violations we deal with regularly are:
- The unit that parks more than 2 cars in the common area parking.
- The unit that utilizes our parking areas to store their automobile.
- Vehicles that have out of state or expired tags.
- The vehicle of a non resident that is being stored here by one of our residents.
- The garage unit that is not utilizing their driveway or garage.
- The unit with a reserved space that is not using that space but uses 2 other spaces.
- Parking along the yellow curb.
- The abandoned car that doesn't belong to any one that we know of.
- Commercial vehicles that park overnight.
Sometimes problems are reported to us by one of your neighbors who are upset because there never seems to
be an open space when they come home from working the late shift. Periodically our community manager and
I drive through the community and observe for ourselves vehicles that are in violation. On one recent drive
through we found over 25 cars with possible violations. To avoid getting a ticket, a letter or towed please make
sure that you familiarize yourself with our rules. You should have a copy. Be aware that parking along a yellow
curb may result in immediate towing without notice!! Take a moment to consider how your actions will
affect your neighbor.
Our recommendations for improving Hunter Village Drive are now with Supervisor Herrity and his VDOT
reps. The process is slow. We will keep you informed as developments occur.

Mission: |
The Safety Committee provides for the general safety of the Daventry community. The Committee establishes rules for the safe usage of community roadways by vehicular and pedestrian traffic, and for the safe usage of common grounds and community facilities. It also hosts Safety Fairs such as the one pictured to the right to be sure that our children are safe riding their bikes, roller blading, or scooting. The Committee also promulgates rules for parking in the common areas. Periodic inspections are conducted to ascertain compliance with the safety rules. |
Meetings: |
The Safety Committee meets on the second Tuesday of every month at 7:30 p.m. at the community center. Sometimes if there is a holiday or we have another activity that month we skip our meeting. Residents wishing to address the committee are asked to contact their neighborhood representative at least 48 hours in advance so we are able to accommodate additional people at the meeting place. |
Membership: |
To join the committee, just come to a meeting. |
